Harvard Chef Cooks for His Country

CAMBRIDGE, MA—July 1, 2005—Chef Brendan Ryan has received his orders and is reporting for "duty" aboard the USS Bataan (LHD-5) on Wednesday, June 29th. Ryan, the Executive Chef of Harvard University Dining Services' campus restaurants division, is participating in the US Navy's "Adopt-a-Ship" program. Chef Ryan will be on the Bataan through the 4th of July holiday; while onboard, Chef Ryan will work with the Naval Culinary Specialists to prepare the regular meals and special holiday event menus, including the elite Commanders' reception. He will be keeping a journal of his thoughts and experiences.

The Navy created the "Adopt-a-Ship" program with the American Culinary Federation (ACF) in order to train Naval Culinary Specialists. Ryan, an ACF Gold Medalist, felt passionate about participating and wrote to the Navy expressing his interest in "providing comfort through food" to our servicemen and women while they are away from home.

Based out of Norfolk, VA, the Bataan is one of only seven Wasp class Amphibious Assault Ships (http://www.bataan.navy.mil/ ). The Bataan will be in Boston to support our 4th of July celebrations with 104 officers, 1004 enlisted and Marine Detachment of 1,894 aboard.
