Local Harvest
Because "factory fresh" just doesn't have the same ring to it as "farm fresh", we buy products that are farmed in New England. This helps preserve our agricultural heritage, while fueling the local economy and benefiting the environment. Working with our major produce distributor, Costa Fruit and Produce, HUDS brings the best of New England to Harvard's tables. You'll already find local apples, winter squashes, mushrooms, lettuce and other produce, but we're working towards sourcing an even greater percentage of our fresh produce from New England farms.

Local fruits and veggies might not look as perfect as their Florida or California cousins, but their taste more than makes up for a bruise here and there. A shorter trip means more flavor since produce can be picked closer to the date it is eaten.

While the average item on the American plate travels 1500 miles to get there, this produce comes from within 250 miles of our home in Cambridge. Fewer miles traveled equals less fuel consumed leading to a healthier environment for all. Plus our dollars are supporting local farmers and building the New England economy.

Produce isn't our only local product either. Hood milk is sourced from New England as are the Cabot and Stonyfield products that we serve. Not to mention our extremely tasty, trans-fat free, whole grain muffins from just down the road in Andover, MA.

Over the years we have focused on specific New England products in local Savory Spotlights. Highlights of 2006 were New England Cheeses and Massachusetts honey from Warm Colors Apiary and the Essex County Beekeepers.
