Harvard Walks for Hunger with Project Bread CAMBRIDGE, MAMay 1, 2005Harvard University has strengthened its partnership with Project Bread by sponsoring both a walk team and a refreshment stand for this year's Walk for Hunger on Sunday, May 1st. This year's efforts are led by Harvard University Dining Services (HUDS) under the auspices of the Food Literacy Project (FLP). Executive Director of HUDS, Ted Mayer, shared his perspective on the Walk for Hunger. "Here at Harvard we are protected from homelessness and hunger, yet we are also aware of it. This is one reason why HUDS has increased its efforts to connect the Harvard community to the greater-Boston community with respect to food-related issues through the FLP", said Mayer. He continued, "It is impossible to ignore the enormous impact that food insecurity has on many in our communities. Funds raised during the Walk for Hunger allow Project Bread to address this issue and the Harvard Walk team will help Project Bread raise awareness of the connection between poverty, poor nutrition and hunger." Team captain and Harvard alumna, Jessica Zdeb ('04) also has high hopes. "By putting the strength of the University community behind us, we can make a difference!" she enthused. The team is comprised of 80+ representatives of the entire Harvard community, including the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, Graduate School of Education, the Business School, the School of Public Health, Harvard Dental School and the Harvard Medical School, and undergrads. Other Harvard groups are volunteering their time and/ or providing entertainment at the refreshment stand, located at the Weeks Footbridge, Cambridge. Dozens of Harvard student-athletes will show Crimson spirit by passing out lemonade and water to the walkers. The Radcliffe Pitches a cappella group is performing from 1pm to 2pm and the Harvard Juggling Club will be there from 2 pm to 3 pm. The refreshment stand will be run by Harvard University Dining Services. Set-up begins at 8AM and the HUDS team expects the majority of walkers to pass through between 12 and 2PM. # # # Contact:Jami Snyder Phone: 617-496-4432 |
